Eco dyeing - old pillowcases 

Discover the colours of everyday Darebin garden plants, weeds and compost with facilitator Annie. Learn about the wide range of materials from which colour can be extracted, and what makes them stick to fabric. 

Introduction to power tools

In this 3-hour, hands-on workshop, you'll learn about some essential repair and refurbishing power tools, and get to use them in a safe and supported environment.

Our facilitator will explain about different drills, sanders and saws, what to use them for and how to use them safely. There will be plenty of time for practising so you can build your competence and confidence.

Introduction to upholstery

In this beginners class, Kelly from Shiner Creative Workshops will demonstrate upholstery tips and techniques and provide participants with a personalised plan of action for their own furniture upholstery project.

Kelly will include advice about fabrics, how to make bias piping and fabric covered buttons, and the basic tools needed for upholstery. 

Lamp cord replacement workshop 

Learn electrical basics with facilitator Michael,  and show examples of different types of lamps and how cords can be replaced.

Bring a small lamp if you'd like to have a go on the day. Or come along and learn what you need to know to repair a lamp at home. 

Learn to sew 

Learn how to set up a sewing machine and get started sewing in this hands-on introduction to machine sewing.

Our facilitator will teach you how to set up a machine – including threading, filling and using bobbins, machine tension and changing needles, and some helpful troubleshooting basics. And then you’ll practise basic sewing stitches while Helen guides you to create a simple cloth carry bag.

Sewing machine maintenance 

Learn how to take care of your own sewing machine - BYO machines – save money on repairs and maintenance, and enjoy a better sewing experience!

Windchimes and other garden art from hard rubbish!


Make your own wind chime or other garden art with assistance and advice from hard rubbish heroes, Emma, Jo and Julie. Find materials in our FREE rummage and repurpose rooms and use the glues, screws, drills, and other tools and materials provided.
